I was already done with the cold. I surprised myself, googling something along the lines of:
“Warmest places in Europe in January”
Or this one:
“Sunny destinations in Europe in January”
Surprisingly, my Canadian roots aren’t good enough. After several months under the Australian sun and a few more months under the Asian sky, I couldn’t handle the cold-ish English weather. I needed my dose of blue sky, my vitamin sea.
There were a few possibilities; Canary Islands, Crete, Morocco or Malta.
And there I was, searching for cheap flights on Skyscanner. … And Malta won.
Malta certainly had a blue sky, but it wasn’t necessarily warm! *Cough* It was the coldest week of the winter.
Once again, I fell in love with another place. I’d go back to Malta anytime.
What to do in Malta? “What to see in Malta” would be the right question here.
Here’s a list of the best places to visit in Malta in photos – for your pretty eyes. I also have a post about how to travel to Malta on a budget. So, get ready to book a flight!
The Most Beautiful Places in Malta
What to see in Malta #1: Valletta
Valletta, the capital of Malta, will impress you with its colorful streets. Recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, you shouldn’t hesitate and add this cute little city to your Maltese bucket list. Take the less busy streets to admire some of the most colorful doors and windows. Valletta rhymes with unique raw street pornography. While you’re there you should also check Valletta waterfront, which is a cool spot to get some original shots.

What to see in Malta #2: Marsaxlokk
I found out about Marsaxlokk while I was trying to decide where to go next… on Instagram. Colorful boats, blue water, and lots of restaurants terraces were quite compelling. From what I saw, it would have been a great idea to attempt a sunrise along the bay, but I was a bit too late for it. I still managed to appreciate a perfectly affordable lunch surrounded by vivid colors.

What to see in Malta #3: Spinola Bay, St-Julian’s
St-Julian is one of the popular places you can find budget accommodation. Even if you’re not staying in the area, you must check out Spinola Bay. Enjoy a walk along the bay and most importantly, be crazy about those bold colors.

What to see in Malta #4: Golden Bay
Golden is the word I’d use to describe the beach at Golden Bay. I suggest you grab a meal at the restaurant on the beach where you will also share this moment with several little birds. (They are cute but cheeky!) This place seems to be a great spot to admire the sunset at night.
What to see in Malta #5: Popeye Village
As soon as I saw this colorful place on Instagram, I knew I had to get to Popeye Village. It wasn’t that easy with public transport, but it was definitely worth it. While you’re there, you should walk around the cliffs.
What to see in Malta #6: The Azure Window
Azure Window is on Gozo (another island accessible by ferry) and is well known because of Game of Thrones. This limestone arch is stunning! It’s quite hard to imagine until you see it! In the area, you’ll have the impression that you are walking on the moon. I’d suggest you walk around the cliff and find your own spot to appreciate the view.
Update: Unfortunately, the Azure Window collapsed in 2017.
There are many spots you should go while you’re in Malta. I only had 6 days, but I hope I can make it back again during summertime.
Next time, these places will be on my list:
Blue Lagoon, Crystal Lagoon, Comino, Mdina, Birgu, and Marsalforn Bay.

BEFORE YOU GO TO MALTA
☑ Book your flight: If your flight isn’t booked yet – check out the flights on Skyscanner or via Google Flights. My top saving tip is flexibility. If you’re flexible, you should be able to find a cheaper flight.
☑ Book your accommodation: I always use Airbnb and Booking.com. If you’d rather stay in a hostel, you should take a look at the options on Hostelworld. If you click on the Airbnb link and you don’t have an account yet – you’ll get a $30 discount on your first booking.
☑ Protect your cute face: Oh, you may want to protect your cute face with a travel medical insurance. I would suggest SafetyWing as they offer the best rates, especially for long-term travelers. Otherwise, you can also take a look at World Nomads.
☑ Pack the essentials: You can consult this list when it’s time to pack your bag! Do not leave without a universal charger, a power bank and your passport!
☑ Do you need a visa? If you aren’t sure if you need a visa, it would be a smart idea to take a quick look before you go. You can use iVisa – it’s super useful and easy to use.
